    Description

Vintage Russian Folklore Lacquer Box The Fisherman and the Fish Signed Date 1967. Condition is "Used".
Offered here is an exceptional hand painted Russian Lacquer Box, depicting the fable/fairytale “The Fisherman And The Fish”, written by Alexander Pushkin in 1833 and first published in 1835. The folklore is a tale of a poor fisherman who catches a “golden fish”.  In return for his freedom, the fish promises to grant the fisherman any wish!  This popular fairytale has been told and passed down through the  generations. (I have included a photo of a 1975 Russian stamp that also depicts the fable.)
The box is classic black lacquer papier-mache with red lining. On it, with great attention to detail, the artist paints a picture of the old man, the golden fish, the old man’s hut and the beautiful blue raging waters. The painted top is framed by gold dots and a gold design adorn the outer case. It is an amazing piece of vintage art, signed by the artist and dated 1967.
    It measures: 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 x 2 1/2 cm
Condition: it is in very good vintage condition, with only two tiny nicks in the lacquer around the edge and a few scratches and wear on the bottom that is commensurate with its age (please see photos). The red inside is magnificent!
