Mayan Death Mask Aztec Mexico Folk Art
Hand made with Black Onyx, Abalone, and Mother of Pearl.
The Aztecs made masks for different rituals and for different gods. The death masks had open mouths and were placed on the faces of dead nobles. The masks would also be worn during certain ceremonies by a priest in an attempt to gain the attention of the gods, also with hope that the gods would recognize them as important and grant them all their wishes and prayers.
This is a relatively new mask but represents an historical view of a very dynamic kingdom.
Measures 6" wide and 9" tall.
Preowned. It is in good clean condition. There are what looks like 2 cracks on the 2 top black onyx stones(see last photos). Not sure if that is how it was made.
